Who is Ste. Marie?
The area of town located just on the Uptown side of Canal Street from the French Quarter was owned by Bertrand and Marie Gravier in the late 18th century.
After a fire decimated the French Quarter, this tract of land became incredibly valuable. The Graviers quickly developed the land, then called Ville Gravier. Upon his wife Marie’s death, Bertrand renamed the area Faubourg (“Neighborhood” in French) Ste. Marie. In the wake of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, significant investment began in the neighborhood and people from other parts of the United States flocked to the city and, in particular, Faubourg Ste. Marie. As such, the neighborhood would eventually become referred to as The American Sector.
Through the 19th and into the 20th century, the American Sector, now known as the Central Business District, continued developing almost without pause. By the mid-20th century, most professional offices in the region were located downtown.
